Success for 2010s in Blantyre
Three Westerton 2010 teams took part in this summer's Blantyre tournament, and each made a big impact with some impressive football marking them out as the sides to watch.
That was evidently noted by the organisers, who picked Wessy kid Zac Smith as the Player of the Tournament - no mean feat in a competition that featured 32 other teams!

wessy strips debut in africa
|
Westerton United strips have made it all the way to Africa, thanks to a generation donation from club coach John Stewart. John sent the strips via Killermont Primary in Bearsden, with deputy head teacher Shona Mathieson forwarding us these pictures earlier today.
John said: "I'm glad these boys have them instead of sitting in a bag in my back room, if anyone has more old kit or football boots then I'm sure Shona could find a good home for them." Shona added: "They are delighted with them and are very grateful for the donation. Anyone with any old kit to donate can get in touch via the contact form on this website - or by speaking to a coach. We'd like to wish the guys the very best of luck in their new kit! |

2001s secure new sponsorship deal
Westerton United are delighted to welcome Boclair Dental Care on board as partners of our 2001s squad. Having opened his first practice in Bearsden in 2008, Dr Drew Gibson opened Boclair Dental Care last year on Milngavie Road, Bearsden.
Boclair provide all of their patients with a full range of NHS treatments (including dental hygienist sessions) delivered by friendly and experienced staff. Denplan and finance options are also available for patients who wish to pay monthly for private dental care.
As the practice has a focus on the prevention of disease, they are part of the NHS Scotland Childsmile initiative, a national programme to improve the oral health of children nationwide.
They believe that dentistry should be accessible for everyone and as such they offer house calls to the elderly, those with special needs and lesser mobile patients. In addition to this we are committed to supporting local care homes with their dental needs.
We're hugely grateful to Drew and his team for their support, and hope to do them proud on the pitch next season.
The new sponsorship deal will see the club's shirts next season carry the Boclair Dental Care logo - which is handily in club colours!

2001s Ready to go
Tonight (Wednesday) saw us take part in the final session of what we believe has been our most professional pre-season ever.
After a tough year in the PJDYFL Division 1 we were delighted to see how positive the boys spirits were on returning to the dreaded first session of the season. That positivity continued throughout our tough, extended pre-season and their hard work during and outwith the sessions allowed us to put plenty of focus on our shape and strategy ahead of the coming season.
We’re delighted with the progress we’ve made over the course of pre-season, and that culminated with an outstanding performance against Ardencaple on Saturday morning that gained plenty of praise from the opponent’s coaches and parents. That meant a great deal, and is a tribute to how quickly the players have adapted to the new roles within the formation we have been working on for the past month and a half.
We’d like to thank Angela Knox for her help in taking MetaFit classes for the boys over the course of pre-season, it was really beneficial and everyone - despite the hilarious expressions on their faces - seemed to really enjoy it! We’re looking forward to continuing working with Angela over the course of the season.
All at the club extend a warm welcome to the club to our summer signings - Evan Hunter, Calum MacAuley, Robbie MacKenzie, Daniel Mulraney and the returning Ross Chapman - and we’re delighted to have all 5 onboard with the club for the new season. All 5 have real quality and add plenty of strength to our squad which was often so small last season we could only name 1 substitute.
As well as the new signings we’re delighted to have Max Clarke, Murdo McCaw, Daryl Conarty, Jamie Mclean, Jack Murphy, Cameron Laird, Frazer Weir, Martin Currie, Ben Stansfield, Roland Smyth, Baillie Spencer, Zaki Khan, Ben Rice and Arran McKenna commit their future to the club for the coming season. After a such a frustrating campaign last year it’s great to see so many players stick by the club for the new season, and we’re delighted they have.
Arran will take the captain's armband for the new season, with Murdo as vice captain.
We wish Ben Mclean, Karam Sambi, Sean Donnelly and Harvey Elliot who left the club over the summer all the very best for the future, and thank them for their contributions to the club on the pitch as well as for the way they conducted themselves away from it.
The competitive stuff now starts with a trip to Airdrie on Saturday to face Milan BC with a 9:20 kick off at Caldervale High School.

2001's are champions
Sunday morning's 2-0 victory over Busby B resulted in the Westerton United 2001's being crowned Champions of the Glasgow and District Youth Football League. The team have been in scintillating form in an ultra competitive league which could still see a 3 way tie for second place overall.
Of the 18 games played, 14 have resulted in victory, 2 in draws and only 2 defeats all season. In a league where only goals up to 9 are counted the side have racked up the most in the division, 75, whilst conceding the least, just 16 goals in 18 games. As well as this the current Riverside Tournament holders are in next months league cup final where they will play Dumbarton United at Toryglen.
Coach Derek Mclean commented:

Coach Derek Mclean commented:
To win a league title takes hard work, dedication, commitment, attitude, allied great skill, flair and talent. These boys have it in abundance. The best bunch of boys I've ever had the pleasure of coaching. Not only talent wise but really well mannered young gentlemen. A pleasure to coach and be around. An interesting footnote is that every single one of our out field players have scored this season! This must be some kind of record at this level of football. I think that's a testament to the type of passing, flowing, attacking football we play. Getting it on the grass, pass, move and shoot. Winning the Wessie way!
Fellow coach, Gordon Clarke added:
Massively proud of all boys and coaches after an incredibly hard season ! We have suffered broken bones, sprains, strains, pains and hard times.
The entire squad has stuck together and is an incredibly tight unit.
During this season we won fourteen games drew two and lost two - We scored seventy five recorded goals, they stop counting at nine per game! We only conceded sixteen.
We have been lauded as being the best footballing team in the league, opting to play the Westerton brand of flowing football.
Only the League Cup Final to go now on 7th June to go for the treble!
ben captains scotland
2001s team captain Ben Mclean represented Scotland under 14's development squad through in Edinburgh last night against local Leith side Spartans. Not only did he play very well he was given the Captains armband for the second half. Doing himself and the club proud!

Milngavie herald season review
The 2001s season review posted below features on page 30 of the Milngavie & Bearsden Herald this week (29th May)
2001s split the old firm
Westerton United 2001s completed a hard season in the Glasgow and District Youth Football league and succeeded in splitting the old firm; finishing second behind champions Rangers, and above Celtic.
The team won nineteen out of their twenty three league games in the 2013/14 season.
During the course of the year there were many highlights with memorable home and away wins over Celtic, a close 1-0 away victory in Coatbridge as well as an equally tight home win at Colquhoun Park, Bearsden finishing with a stunning winner in the last two minutes of the game sealing a 3-2 victory.
The winter saw many waterlogged pitches as well as mud, hail and wind to contend with. The most testing of these games was a close 3-2 win over then high flying Busby in February- who were at that point running top of the league- a gritty performance was required to win the points.
The team got to the quarter finals of the Scottish Regional Cup, just losing out to Clydebank on Penalties in March following a closely fought 3-3 draw.
All in all a great first 11 a side season in what is widely regarded as one of the toughest leagues in the country.

2000s regional cup final date & time confirmed
Gary Black's 2000s face Hamilton Accies in the final of the West of Scotland regional cup at Ochilview Stadium, Larbert on Sunday 8th of June with a 11am kick off. Support from all other age groups would be greatly appreciated!
Mud,sweat & cheers for 2001s
The 2001s recorded a hard fought 3-2 victory over second top Busby in tricky conditions this morning. With a number of players ruled out for a variety of reasons the team could only name 1 outfield substitute but despite this they managed to overcome strong opposition,a gale force wind and a playing surface that resembled a ploughed field.
Westerton took the lead midway through the first half when Zaki Kahn sent Jamie McLean through on goal and he rolled the ball beyond the advancing keepers despairing dive. Five minutes later Busby equalised when an attacker tapped from a close range pullback. Not to be disheartened Westerton scored their second soon after through another cool finish from McLean. This gave Wessie the 2-1 advantage at half time.
Busby, now with a strong wind at their backs came flying out of the traps in the second half and five minutes in they equalised for the second time through another scrappy tap in. The wind was now starting to play a large part in the game as Busby began to threaten more, however as the pitch began to deteriorate as a result of a heavy hail shower some great link up play from Westerton saw McLean score his third and claim his hat-trick to seal a well deserved and hard fought three points for the team.
The result leaves them 2 points behind the opposition but with 3 games in hand.

Dumbarton Riverside Festival
The 2000s and 2001s both took part in the Dumbarton Riverside tournament on Saturday 17th August.
Both teams performed well. The 2000s finishing top in their League leading to a place in the final against Baljaffray which they went on to win and lift the trophy for 2000 age group.
The 2001s also reached their final, having won all of their games in their league then competed strongly in their own final, only to lose out in the final few minutes to Lenzie by two goals to nil.
All in all a strong performance from both Westerton teams.

2001 Blues
The 2001 blues took part in their final tournament today in monsoon conditions at Douglas Academy,Milngavie. All the boys competed well in atrocious conditions in what was also coach Roddy Chapman's final game in charge. All the coaches, parents and players would like to record their thanks to Roddy for his hard work and commitment over the last few years and we wish the boys all the best in the future.
98s Make Quarters
Westerton hosted Barrhead Utd at Milton Leisure Centre for a place in the quarter finals of the regional cup. Both teams started nervously trying to get a hold of the game, after 7 mins Fraser was in the right place to get on the end of a deflected shot to calmly slot home to put Wessie one up.This settled the boys down and they had the upper hand creating two or three great chances but failing to take them. This was punished when the Barrhead centre took a pass in the penalty area turned inside the defender and curled the ball into the net for a well taken equaliser.Worse was to follow when after a cutback from the byeline the same player made the half time score 2-1 Barrhead.Wessie started the second half slowly but gradually got the upper hand and when a free kick from Conor flicked off a Barrhead defender to make it 2 a piece it was straight to a penalty shoot out.Conor,Lucas,Dan C and Jed all scored and Michael produced two fantastic saves to see the boys through 4-1 and into the 1/4 finals for the second year running where we will meet Antonine at home on Sunday 2nd March.
98s record impressive win
Westerton utd clocked up their highest ever score in a 14-0
victory against rutherglen. In a match where all 15 boys contributed well the
highlights were a 5 goal haul from new boy Jay Preston,a hat trick from Cameron
Govan (which earned him a bag of sweets from Daniel C) and a clean sheet for Michael and his defensive buddies.
